A familiar hymn with a different arrangement. I had never heard the phrase in Verse 2, “Death of death, and hell’s destruction,”. Nor have I ever seen Christ’s sacrifice more vividly described. Truly, he has slain death for us and destroyed our reason to fear hell.
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim thro’ this barren land,
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand,
Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the living waters flow,
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through,
Lead me all my journey through.
Feed me with the heaven’ly manna,
In this barren wilderness;
Be my sword, and shield, and banner,
Be the Lord my Righteousness;
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
