No. 139 Awake! Awake!

Verse 1:
Awaken, ye who slumber,
The foe is at the gates;
A host no man can number,
Upon your Captain waits,
Yet you are idly sleeping,
As if with naught to do,
While angel eyes are keeping
An anxious watch on you.

Refrain:
Awake! Awake! Your station take,
And fight to win your crown;
Awake! Awake! Your station take,
And fight to win your crown.

Verse 2:
The battlecry is ringing
Wherever sin is found;
The battlesong they’re singing,
The whole wide earth around,
Up, then, and join their number,
Your place no one can fill;
Up from this slothful slumber,
And fight with heart and will.

Verse 3:
This is no time for sleeping,
Before you is the foe;
With stealthy step he’s creeping,
Spring up and lay him low;
Fling wide abroad the banner,
Of Christ, your Lord and King,
And shout a loud hosanna,
Till heav’n’s high arches ring.
