No. 146 Ho! Christian, be Thou Active

I believe we should be active as Christians, witnessing through both word and deed. However, I do not believe that our works will gain us entrance to Heaven, as Verse 2 seems to imply. We serve as an expression of love and gratitude, not to earn salvation.

Verse 1:
Ho! Christian, be thou active,
For Christ thy Lord is near;
Thou knowest not the moment
In which He shall appear;
Behold, He cometh quickly,
Oh, may He come to-day,
To thrill you with His gladness,
Not fill you with dismay.

Refrain:
Ho! Christian, be thou active,
For Christ thy Lord is near;
Thou knowest not the moment
In which He shall appear.

Verse 2:
Reward He bringeth with Him,
And He will bring to thee,
According to the measure
Of what thy work shall be;
And those He calleth blessed,
Who His commandment do,
They at the gates of heaven,
Shall find an entrance through.

Verse 3:
Lift up thine eyes, O Christian!
His glory streams afar;
He shineth in His beauty,
“The bright and Morning Star,”
Go spread His invitation,
Go ring it forth until
Thro’ all the world has sounded,
“Come, whosoever will.”
