No. 130

No title is given for this hymn. “Today” was in process of becoming one word from two.

Verse 1:
To-day the Savior calls;
Ye wanderers, come;
O ye benighted souls,
Why longer roam?

Verse 2:
To-day the Savior calls;
Oh, listen now!
Within these sacred walls
To Jesus bow.

Verse 3:
The Spirit calls to-day;
Yield to His power;
Oh, grieve Him not away;
‘Tis mercy’s hour.

S.F. Smith, D.D.

No. 61 What are You Going to Do?

Verse 1:
Jesus is calling and bids you return,
Why will you longer His mercy spurn?

Refrain:
Jesus is waiting, waiting, waiting,
Christians are fervently praying for you;
While yet the door of sweet mercy is open,
Brother, oh, what are you going to do?

Verse 2:
Boundless in mercy, inviting He stands,
Bearing a pardon within His hands.

Verse 3:
Often rejected, He comes yet again,
When will you love and accept Him–when?

Verse 4:
Life is receding and ebbing away,
Why will you longer from Jesus stay?

Verse 5:
Christ is most tenderly calling to you;
Brother, oh, what are you going to do?

Verse 6:
Why not accept Him whose love is so great,
Ere you shall find it forever too late?

E.A. Hoffman/E.B. Smith

No. 7 Oh, Won’t You be a Christian?

“Melting” in Verse 2 means “softening in feeling” as one’s heart would be. I find it a little funny that this song is reprinted by permission from another work, “Happy Voices”, given its somber tone.

Verse 1:
Oh, won’t you be a Christian
While you’re young?
Oh, won’t you be a Christian
While you’re young?
Don’t think it will be better
To delay it until later,
But, remember your Creator
While you’re young?

Verse 2:
Oh, won’t you love the Savior
While you’re young?
Oh, won’t you love the Savior
While you’re young?
For you He left His glory,
And embraced a cross so gory:
Won’t you heed the melting story
While you’re young?

Verse 3:
Remember, death may find you
While you’re young!
Remember, death may find you
While you’re young:
For friends are often weeping,
And the stars their watch are keeping
O’er the grassy graves, where sleeping
Lie the young.

Verse 4:
Oh, walk the path to glory
While you’re young;
Oh, walk the path to glory
While you’re young;
And Jesus will befriend you,
And from danger will defend you,
And a peace divine will send you
While you’re young.

Verse 5:
Then won’t you be a Christian
While you’re young?
Then won’t you be a Christian
While you’re young?
Why from the future borrow,
When, ere comes another morrow
You may weep in endless sorrow
While you’re young?

Hark! There comes a Whisper

Verse 1:
Hark! there comes a whisper
Stealing on thine ear;
‘Tis the Saviour calling,
Soft, soft and clear.

Refrain:
“Give thy heart to me,
Once I died for thee;”
Hark! Hark! thy Saviour calls:
Come, sinner, come!

Verse 2:
With that voice so gentle,
Dost thou hear Him say;
“Tell Me all thy sorrows;
Come, come away!”

Verse 3:
Wouldst thou find a Refuge
For thy soul oppressed?
Jesus kindly answers:
“I am thy rest.”

Verse 4:
At the cross of Jesus
Let thy burden fall;
While He gently whispers,
“I’ll bear it all.”

F.J. Crosby/W.H. Doane

Come, while the Saviour Calls

Verse 1:
Come, while the Saviour calls,
Come, while you may;
Haste to His loving arms;
How can you stay?

Refrain:
Once He was crucified;
Once for your sins He died;
Come to the cleansing tide
Flowing to-day.

Verse 2:
Come, while the Saviour calls,
Turn not away;
Now, the accepted time,
Love pleads today.

Verse 3:
Come, while the Saviour calls,
Do not delay;
Come to a throne of grace,
Seek Him to-day.

Verse 4:
Come, while the Saviour calls,
Seek Him by prayer;
Come to the mercy-seat,
Jesus is there.

Fanny J. Crosby/Wm.J. Kirkpatrick

Come, Sinner, Come

Verse 1:
While Jesus whispers to you,
Come, sinner, come!
While we are praying for you,
Come, sinner, come!
Now is the time to own Him,
Come, sinner, come!
Now is the time to know Him,
Come, sinner, come!

Verse 2:
Are you too heavy laden?
Come, sinner, come!
Jesus will bear your burden,
Come, sinner, come!
Jesus will not deceive you,
Come, sinner, come!
Jesus can now redeem you,
Come, sinner, come!

Verse 3:
Oh, hear His tender pleading,
Come, sinner, come!
Come and receive the blessing,
Come, sinner, come!
While Jesus whispers to you,
Come, sinner, come!
While we are praying for you,
Come, sinner, come!

Welcome, Wanderer, Welcome

Verse 1:
In the land of strangers,
Whither thou art gone,
Hear a far voice calling,
“My son! my son!”

Refrain:
“Welcome, wand’rer, welcome,
Welcome back to home!
Thou hast wandered far away;
Come home! come home!

Verse 2:
“From the land of hunger,
Fainting, famished, lone,
Come to love and gladness,
My son! my son!”

Verse 3:
“Leave the haunts of riot,
Wasted, woe-be-gone,
Sick at heart and weary,
My son! my son!”

Verse 4:
“See the door still open,
Thou art still my own;
Eyes of love are on thee,
My son! my son!”

Verse 5:
“Far off thou hast wandered;
Wilt thou farther roam?
Come, and all is pardoned,
My son! my son!”

Verse 6:
“See the well-spread table
Unforgotten one!
Here is rest and plenty,
My son! my son!”

Verse 7:
“Thou art friendless, homeless,
Hopeless, and undone;
Mine is love unchanging,
My son! my son!”
