No. 158 I am Waiting, Dear Jesus, for Thee

Verse 1:
I am waiting for Jesus to welcome me home,
To the place He has gone to prepare,
To the mansion of light and the robe, pure and white,
To the harp and the crown for me there.
Waiting, waiting, I am waiting, dear Jesus for Thee;
Waiting, dear Jesus, yes , waiting for Thee.

Verse 2:
How I long to be roaming the blest fields of light,
With the dear, loving children of light;
And to sing the sweet song as we’re marching along,
Of redemption thro’ Jesus’ might.
Waiting, waiting, I am waiting, dear Jesus for Thee;
Waiting, dear Jesus, yes , waiting for Thee.

Verse 3:
Many loved ones have I in that beautiful land,
They are watching and waiting for me;
And they beckon me o’er to that bright happy shore,
There the beauties of heaven to see.
Ever, longing, all the beauties of heaven to see.
Ever I’m longing, dear Jesus, I’m longing heaven to see.

Verse 4:
Roll along, then, sweet moments, and bear me away
To my beautiful home in the sky,
To the land of the blest, where I sweetly shall rest
In the palace of Jesus on high.
Ever, longing, all the beauties of heaven to see.
Ever I’m longing, dear Jesus, I’m longing heaven to see.

No. 51

No title is given for this hymn, although I believe it is “In the Secret of His Presence”.

Verse 1:
In the secret of His presence,
I am kept from strife of tongues,
His pavilion is around me,
And within are ceaseless songs;
Stormy winds, His words fulfilling,
Beat without, but cannot harm,
For the Master’s voice is stilling
Storm and tempest to a calm.

Verse 2:
In the secret of His presence,
All the darkness disappears,
For a sun that knows no setting,
Throws a rainbow on my fears,
So the day grows ever brighter,
Broadening to the perfect noon,
So the way grows ever brighter,
Heaven is coming near and soon.

Verse 3:
In the secret of His presence,
Nevermore can foes alarm,
In the shadow of the highest,
I can meet them with a song.
For the strong pavilion hides me,
Turns their fiery darts aside,
And I know whate’er betides me,
I shall live because He died.

Verse 4:
In the secret of His presence,
In the sweet, unbroken rest,
Pleasures, joys, in glorious fullness,
Making earth like Eden blest;
So my peace grows deep and deeper,
Widening as it nears the sea,
For my Savior is my keeper,
Keeping mine and keeping me.

No. 49 Sweet By-and-By

Verse 1:
There’s a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way,
To prepare us a dwelling place there.

Refrain:
In the sweet by-and-by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore,
In the sweet by-and-by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

Verse 2:
We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blest,
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

Verse 3:
To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise,
For the glorious gift of His love,
And the blessings that hallow our days.

No. 47 Kind Words Can Never Die

Verse 1:
Kind words can never die,
Cherish’d and blest;
God knows how deep they lie,
Stor’d in the breast;
Live childhood’s simple rhymes,
Said o’er a thousand times,
Ay, in all years and climes,
Distant and near,
Kind words can never die,
Never die, never die ,
Kind words can never die,
No, never, die.

Verse 2:
Sweet thot’s can never die,
Tho’, like the flow’rs,
Their brightest hues may fly
In wintry hours;
But when the gentle dew
Gives them their charms anew,
With many an added hue
They bloom again,
Sweet thot’s can never die,
Never die, never die,
Sweet thot’s can never die,
No, never die.

Verse 3:
Our souls can never die,
Tho’ in the tomb
We may all have to lie,
Wrapp’d in its gloom,
What tho’ the flesh decay,
Souls pass in peace away,
Live thro’ eternal day
With Christ above,
Our souls can never die,
Never die, never die,
Our souls can never die,
No, never die.

No. 43 Wonderful Love

Verse 1:
‘Tis love, ’tis love, ’tis wonderful love!
‘Twas God’s great love for me,
That sent the Savior from above,
My sacrifice to be!

Refrain:
Wonderful, wonderful love,
Wonderful, wonderful love,
That sent the Savior from above,
My sacrifice to be.

Verse 2:
‘Tis love, ’tis love, ’tis wonderful love!
That fills my soul today;
‘Tis love that follows where I rove,
That seeks me when I stray.

Verse 3:
‘Tis love, ’tis love, ’tis wonderful love!
That casteth out all fear,
‘Tis love that doth my song approve,
And whispers, “I am near.”

Verse 4:
‘Tis love, ’tis love, ’tis wonderful love!
Will take me home at last,
To sing love’s praise thro’ endless days,
When trials are all past.

No. 41 Lily of the Valley

Verse 1:
I’ve found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see,
All I need to cleanse and keep me fully whole;
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay,
He tells me ev’ry care on Him to roll.

Refrain:
He’s the Lily of the Valley,
The bright and morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

Verse 2:
He all my griefs has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tow’r;
I have all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
From my heart, and now He keeps me by His power,
Tho’ all the world forsake me, and Satan tempts me sore,
Thro’ Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.

Verse 3:
He’ll never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear;
With His manna He my hungry soul shall fill;
Then sweeping up to glory we see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll.

No. 38 Shall We Gather at the River

My maternal maternal great-grandfather died when I was eight. This was his favorite hymn.

Verse 1:
Shall we gather at the river
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

Refrain:
Yes, we’ll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river–
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

Verse 2:
On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy, golden day.

Verse 3:
On the bosom of the river,
Where the Savior-king we own,
We shall meet, and sorrow never
‘Neath the glory of the throne.

Verse 4:
Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we ev’ry burden down’
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

Verse 5:
At the smiling of the river,
Rippling with the Savior’s face,
Saints whom death will never sever
Lift their songs of saving grace.

Verse 6:
Soon we’ll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
